How Often Should You Replace Your HVAC Filter?

Changing your HVAC filter is the single easiest, cheapest thing you can do for your system — and skipping it causes a surprising share of breakdowns. Here’s how often to do it and why it matters.

How often to change it

As a rule of thumb: a basic 1-inch filter every 1–3 months; thicker 4- to 5-inch media filters every 6–12 months. Change more often if you have pets, allergies, a lot of dust, or run the system heavily in peak summer and winter. The easiest habit is to check it monthly and swap it when it looks gray and loaded.

If you can’t see the filter material through the dust, it’s overdue.

Why a clogged filter causes real damage

A dirty filter chokes off airflow, and that cascades: the system works harder (higher bills), the evaporator coil can freeze, the furnace can overheat and trip its safety switch, and over time the strain shortens the equipment’s life. A huge number of ‘my AC isn’t cooling’ and ‘my furnace shut off’ calls trace back to a filter no one had changed in a year.

It’s a couple of dollars and two minutes — the best maintenance ROI there is.

Which filter to buy

Match the size printed on your current filter, and pick a MERV rating that balances filtration with airflow — MERV 8–11 suits most homes. Very high-MERV filters trap more but can restrict airflow on some systems, so check what your unit is rated for or ask a tech.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new filter really help cooling?

Yes — restricted airflow from a dirty filter is one of the most common causes of weak cooling and frozen coils. A fresh filter often restores performance on its own.

What MERV rating should I use?

MERV 8–11 works well for most homes — good filtration without choking airflow. Check your system’s maximum rating before going higher.
